The English Russells

Would you like a complete set of Mary Russell novels?  You know, Mary Russell, whose first Memoir, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, was published twenty years ago this spring?  What if they were the gorgeous UK Russells?  And maybe, hardbacks?UK Russells

(I’ll even toss in the 20th Anniversary Edition of The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, as well!)

If you’d like this pile o’ Russells, here’s your assignment:  Tell me—

“How The Beekeeper’s Apprentice Changed my Life.”

Or if that’s a bit too melodramatic for you, feel free to tone it down to:

“When I First Met Mary Russell, She…”

This can be an essay, a short story, a poem, a video, a painting—anything, really (although if it’s enormous and/or perishable, maybe you can send a photo of it, instead…)  This contest is to go along with the National Library Association’s theme for the year: Lives change @ your library.   So, you get extra points in your submission if it has something to do with a library.

Send your essay/poem/video etc. to:  info@oldsite.laurierking.com  (Subject: Beekeeper) by May 27 (pub day for the shiny new Beekeeper hardcover).   The winner will be announced later that week.

(Quick quiz: what’s missing from the above?  And why do you think I left that title out?)

So get cracking, I want to see that creativity flow!

Also, in case you forgot, we’re doing library drawings too, for five more editions of the Book Club in a Box.  If you know a library that might like fifteen copies of a Russell title for their book clubs, email me that library’s name, at: info@oldsite.laurierking.com (Subject: Library).

  1. Elizabeth Z says:

Did you know that the Russell books are not available through the NLS/BARD system? That’s a free national library of audiobooks and Braille copies for registered legally blind folks. For many blind people BARD is the only method they have of obtaining reading material. While you’re helping out libraries for sighted folk, please take a moment to ask your publisher if they will also help out the national library for the blind. Thank you.

Good idea, do you know anything about how I might go about donating audio CDs to them? A good contact person?
      Laurie

      • Elizabeth Z says:

I made a few phone calls and now have the name of the correct contact person. I left a message with him. If I can’t get to a live person in his department within a day I will send you the info I have. Thank you!

  2. Lisa Cross says:

I love the cover of your new book. Can’t wait to open it and read it!!

  3. Jarrett Smith says:

I’m not sure if comments is the proper place to enter the Quick Quiz so forgive me if it’s not.
The book that is missing is “The Game.” Could it be there were problems with the Kipling estate?

    • Laurie King says:

There’s no particular prize for the quiz, short of the honor of being quick. Yes, it was The Game, and no, the Kiplings have no problems with it as far as I know. But it’s to encourage everyone to play…the Game.

  4. Lise Pellerin says:

For me it was the loss issue for Mary that touched me and how Holmes addressed her feelings of guilt, survivor’s guilt really, with such honesty and true compassion…I say, true compassion.

  5. I firs became aware of the Mary Russell series through the BBC radio adaptation by Shaun Prendergrast. (By the way, I tried to send you an audio CD of that adaptation, but the Post Office returned it because your Post Office box was either full or because no one checked on it! If you’d like me to try sending it to you again, please send me a private email telling me what address to use.) I would just LOVE to see the BBC do more of these–preferably, every book in the series!

  6. Kathy Reel says:

I need to get busy on writing something for this contest. So many people I know would love for me to win it, as I would quite literally be struck dumb for a long period of time if I won UK hardback copies of these most amazing novels. My husband would probably be the most grateful. Hehehe!
